My first scifi... did NOT disappoint

This was my first scifi and boy did it NOT disappoint! I'm an extreme layperson here, but from what I could tell the amount of research, detail, and hours and hours of thought that went into this book seems staggering! Fantastic read!

I really enjoyed this book but think it would
Have done better without the romance at the end.

The good parts of this story. Talking dolphins? I loved them. (Squee!) Characters who act like real people is always nice to read about.

The bad parts of the story. The science has some real issues.

Over all a very nice escape from the real world.

Absolutely loved this book! The idea we could talk to animals especially beautiful ones like the dolphins just left me speachless and emotional. Can't wait for new works from this author.

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

I didn't like the way women were referenced in the book (other than one main character, whose body was focused on as soon as she was introduced, all women are side characters who are for the benefit of men). There were also some debatably racist comments, and one that's definitely transphobic, even if it wasn't meant that way. It was enough in 32 pages that I knew I would just continue getting annoyed.

Talking dolphins, submarines, former Navy SEALS, an alarming discovery in Antarctica, and a mysterious discovery in the Atlantic.... All the makings of a good book. The characters are smart and well-written, and several separate subplots all merge well into the main plot. This is an author I'm going to read more of.

3 & 1/2 stars
This book is fun--a little sci-fi, a little thriller and a little adventure novel. Kind of fun that it has a sequel too.

The story took a while to unfold but picked up speed and became more engaging about 60% through. A blend between thriller and sci fi with the fate of millions of lives at stake and ground breaking interactions with dolphins added a human interest element to it. From a character perspective there is a lot of macho political and military cast along with a few scientists and computer engineers. The female characters were in some small ways objectified and not taken seriously until very late in the book with Alison basically pining for Clay after stereotypically not liking him in a chick flick manner while adding a bit of marine scientific knowledge and emotional connection with the dolphins. I would liked to have seen her character portrayed in a deeper way.
I generally liked Clay as the overarching protagonist and also liked Ms. Locke towards the end of the book. The sci fi characters offer opportunity for developing and exploring the story in a totally different direction as the series develops if the author chooses to do so.
There was a strong science orientation and disrespect for religion and faith and specifically using Jesus name as a curse that I didn’t like in a few places. The writing felt like it could have been stronger or benefited from more thorough editing with so many adverbs that could have been written differently to provide more depth to the description. It was a reasonably interesting story once it got to the end though it left a lot of suspension of disbelief with a few of the minor characters improbably surviving; I just would have liked to see some differences throughout.
