I received this advanced reader copy through a Goodreads giveaway.

Really, I had no idea what to expect from this book. The description was so wonderfully bizarre, I knew I had to check it out. Reluctant Immortals IS a weird book, and so incredibly fun. Lucy from Dracula and Bertha from Jane Eyre in California in 1967?! Yes, perfect. The plot was well paced, making this book impossible to put down, and the two female leads were extremely well-draw, fully realized, bad asses.

Reading Dracula or Jane Eyre is not necessary to enjoy Reluctant Immortals, as Kiste does a great job of filling the reader in on the pertinent parts of the older novels without bogging down her own story.

Reluctant Immortals was so much fun to read, like a paranormal beach read. I’m glad I took a chance on it.

3.5 stars, rounded up. I loved the premise of the book, and I did enjoy reading it, but it got a little heavy-handed with the metaphors.

“I never stay dead for long.”

Dracula’s Lucy and Jane Eyre’s Bertha aka Bee are immortals in LA/SF in the 60s. Was this created from my subconscious?

This book felt deeply unserious in a way that I appreciate. If literary camp isn’t already a thing, this is it. As someone who loves vampire stories but not heavy horror, this really worked for me.

“How are you?
Dead. And you?
The same.”

This is a story about two forgotten women facing their literal demons. & while the plot was a bit thin/themes heavy handed at times, I enjoyed the heck out of it. Audiobook narrator was excellent!

My toxic trait is not being able to dnf a book when I absolutely do not enjoy it. This premise had so much promise, but the story ended up being so boring and shallow.

For the second time in as many weeks, I'm wondering two things. First, how does one make vampires so boring. Second, did I dislike this because I'm reading it from a man's point of view. The book makes clear how dudes are the worst, and we are, but I don't think that's the origin of my discontent. Nothing ever really seems to fit together. Sucks, really. Also lol.
