Kiste states that she wanted to take back the stories of these women, Lucy from Dracula and Bertha from Jane Eyre, and give them the their fair take. She is very successful is this endeavor. I was quite familiar with Dracula and Lucy, but I have not read Jane Eyre. I think I got enough of an idea from Kiste to understand B's character.
I did have a couple issues with the book, I understand who Lucy in immortal, but I don't know why B or Edward Rochester is. Maybe if I read Jane Eyre there might be something there. Also the confrontations with Lucy, B, and Jane vs Dracula and Rochester just didn't land for me in my reading experience.
When you overlay this book and it's look back at Gothic literature and women's place in this stories with modern Hollywood, you can really see the parallels. The Me-Too movement does a similar thought, shining a light on the inequities in society. Kiste does an excellent job in bringing those two things into focus. A couple other things that were great was the comparison of vampirism to sexuality (and unwanted contact) and the look at the Summer of Love and the hippie culture.

I accept that Edward Rochester is walking red flag but even painting him as an outright villian cannot make me hate him.
