First of all the first 50% of the book was so light and happy, I DREADED reading the next 50%. This book is a reread (part of my annual TOG reread to torture myself), so I already know what I'm in for, and it's the saddest shit ever. This book is crucial to the later parts of the story. I love SJM's world building and how she incorporates characters from earlier parts of the story into the climax of the later books. During my first read, I read this book after book 2, pero now na gina reread nako sha, reading this book before book 1 is the best way to go about it. Celaena's naivety and the betrayals she experienced in this book was rlly hard to read, gikapoy nako ma sad! Don't even get me started on Sam Cortland, he deserves the world huhu such a pure soul i luv him so much hahays. Reading this for the nth time around doesnt make the pain any less. They should have fucking left Rifthold ASAP, I wouldn't be mad if the series was cut to 3 books as long as Sam and Celaena were happy 😭 This book was painful in the best way possible 😖

That was rough to read after Heir of Fire, knowing how it would end

This book caused me so much pain. I read it 4th (after Heir of Fire). I know there’s much discussion about the reading order but I enjoyed reading it 4th, though I would have also enjoyed reading it 3rd. I think reading at least the first two books before this makes you feel connected to the FMC. I feel like if I would have started with this book, I would have thought she was a bit of an arrogant prick for the first 75% of the book. It was good to know the 2 big events that happen near the end beforehand, and it didn’t make reading the details any less painful. This book gave so much context as to why the FMC says, thinks, and acts how she does, which I really liked. This book was wild and sad and painful and I enjoyed every page.

I read this after books 1 and 2, and I’ve got to say that it helped me appreciate Celaena’s character development more. I’m glad I didn’t read it first, I think that might have spooned a few plot points, but it did help me to like her more as a person.

I waited to read this book until after I finished reading Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, and Heir of Fire, and I am SO happy I did. I learned so many little things about Celaena and why she does what she does and feels what she feels. I don’t think I would’ve appreciated them nearly as much if I would’ve read this book first as intended.
Easily my favorite book in the series so far!!
