I feel like caelena was a little extra stupid here. They should have run, broke if need be, but run. But hindsight is 20/20, I know, and her relationship with Arobynn over the years has effed her up…

Okay so I actually knew how this book ended because I’d accidentally seen a spoiler before I even started reading TOG (and btw this review will contain SPOILERS - you have been warned) but despite knowing how it ended I was still a snotty, snivelling, sobbing mess. So much so that I had to stop reading THAT chapter about ten times because I couldn’t read the words through my tears.

Seriously, SPOILERS ahead…

I am so so so SAD. I loved Sam so much. He was one of those people that are just filled with goodness - good intentions, a good heart and a good soul. Reading about how he was tortured was physically painful - I’ve never felt fictional grief like it before.

ā€œThis was some dream, or she had gone to Hell after all, because she couldn't exist in the world where this had been done to himā€ - honestly me neither. Even thinking about makes me start crying all over again.

ā€œShe would tuck Sam into her heart, a bright light for her to take out whenever things were darkest. And then she would remember how it had felt to be loved, when the world had held nothing but possibility. No matter what they did to her, they could never take that away. She would not break.ā€ - yup still crying.

AND ALSO I cannot believe that ā€œMy name is Caelena Sardothian and I will not be afraidā€ comes from Sam - ā€œI am Sam Cortland and I will not be afraidā€. That is a gut punch and now I’m crying all over again.

A lot of people, including SJM, say to read this after Heir of Fire and I disagree. I ended up following that advice and found myself wishing I'd read this book first. Reading this book first would have made me care more about Sam than I did when I read the first books. The pacing here is good and I enjoyed how the stories created a timeline of events for the main character.
