This was a fun weekend read. The pivots and twists were unexpected and fun to read. I found the ending to have a high self importance of self for the main character that wasn’t justified by the characters past.

Such an intense book. From page one, you hit the ground running with the characters, not knowing what’s happening but so intrigued that you’re compelled to help them figure it out. This book is mysterious, thrilling, and full of love. I really enjoyed the plot arc and the characters are loveable even in the face of difficult decisions.

This was a super quick audiobook for me- kept me engaged and eager to hear what was happening next. Usually I get bored when chapters are based in flashbacks but for this book each of those moments were intriguing. For a while I thought this was going to be a 5 star but at the last quarter of the book or maybe closer to the end, it started to disappoint me because I felt there was too sudden of a drop in energy/ thriller tone. So it ended up between a 3.5 and 4.

Hannah met her husband Owen two years ago and even though she feels like she knows everything about him, she is completely and utterly wrong. One morning, news breaks that Owen's company is being investigated by the FBI & that the CEO -Owen's direct boss- has been arrested. Owen goes missing and Hannah doesn't hear from him, except for a note that is delivered by a 12 year old girl who says he paid her to deliver the note to Hannah and it says "Protect her". Hannah knows this means to protect Bailey, who is his 16 year old daughter and Hannah's stepdaughter. Their lives change in an instant, leaving them both broken and hurt and confused plus, their neighbors are mad at them, the FBI and a U.S. marshall come around.. It quickly becomes overwhelming and distressing.

Hannah & Bailey decide sitting around isn't going to do anyway so they take initiative and follow the clues. Bailey uses memories of her life before Northern California and it leads them to Austin, TX

This book was made into a limited series on Apple TV, starring Jennifer Garner as Hannah, and I really enjoyed it!

Overall Thoughts:
  • The "mystery" element of this novel felt half-baked and a little unbelievable. If there was a greater build-up to the big reveal, I might have found it more convincing.

  • I was initially attracted to this book because the summary made it seem like the relationship between the main character and her step-daughter would be a main focus (ya'll know I'm a sucker for cross-generational female friendships). That was definitely present, but not as heavily as  I wanted it to be.

  • I enjoyed the narration of the audiobook! Rebecca Lowman's voice is very soothing and I could listen to this before bed or early in the morning without feeling irritated XD
