From the ground, we stand. From our ships, we live. By the stars, we hope.

If the bright shining future of optimistic sci-fi feels trite and unreachable, but grim-dark seems too depressingly realistic… this book feels like just the right kind of hopeful.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I stopped listening to all my podcasts to focus on this book. It’s my 5th Becky Chambers book since December (it being January 5th now).

In some ways this book feels low-stakes. It’s a collection of calming slice of life stories. But the underlying topics are so fundamental to humanity it may actually be the highest stakes outside of a war zone. It’s about leaving the place that you were raised, seeking out a new home elsewhere. Emigration and immigration. Making your way through a sea change in the economy. The push and pull of caring for aging parents. It is a beautiful book, and the perfect antidote to this upcoming election year.

Best series ever. Becky Chambers writing is so emotional I feel SO connected to the characters. It’s like I have been written into this book and I’m experiencing everything that’s happening in real time. I don’t want this series to be over!

Space communism ftw

But seriously. Delightful book. Definitely thought I wouldn't like it as much as previous entries in the series at the beginning (the wider range of pov characters I think made it take longer to get into a groove), but i really loved it by the end.

A very good third book in an excellent series, but I have to admit that I preferred the first two books over this one. However, that's not to say that I didn't enjoy this book, because I fully did. Becky Chambers has just set an impossible standard for herself.

This book was such a disappointment after the others in the series. While the first two books raised interesting questions through building great characters within a well thought out world, this one is fragmented, didactic, and worse yet—boring.
