Aaaaagh! What is this? 1/4 of the way through this book and you're still introducing characters that have no relation to each other and nothing is happening! It's a setup for something, I guess, but I'm bored out of my mind because I have no reason to care about any of these people yet so I just stopped reading entirely. Mainly a disappointment coming off the 5/5 masterpiece that was the previous book. Oh well.

This was an enjoyable group of new perspectives of Exodans aboard the homestead fleet that long ago left Earth. Quite a surprise twist in the middle that brought many of the characters together and helped define the paths they were struggling with. I don't often describe sci-fi as "cozy", but the slice-of-life narrative style makes this book feel just that. Lots of heart in this one.

As always, Chambers gives us a great set of characters and a snapshot of their lives at pivotal moments. This instalment looks a lot at traditions and inter-cultural (or, in the book, inter-species) relations. Understanding others who are different from yourself. Beautifully written, cosy sci-fi.
