Becky Chambers is phenomenal at writing platonic and familial love, which this installment of the Wayfarers series is chock full of. All of the characters are written so compassionately and each separate story is compelling. While the Wayfarer series is predominantly about people coexisting with others unlike themselves, this book in particular really examines humanity from an outside perspective and questions why we do things the way we do. Like all of Becky Chambers' books, this one had me perpetually misty-eyed. I'm both excited to read the next book and saddened that I'm nearing the end of the series.
I just finished the other two Wayfarers and at first I thought this one was a little slow, but it turned out to be my FAVORITE of the three. I loved them all and can’t wait to get my hands on more Becky Chambers. A well thought out world that gets into the nitty gritty of how clashing and changing societies would really work.
the best book in this series so far, and certainly deserving of the hugo it won...the best parts of this book felt informed by the best parts of ursula leguin's writing: thoughtful about people and the relationships and societies they build, and kind to all of the characters as they learned throughout the pages. this book is mostly plotless, but the fullness and depth of the characters and the world their ancestors built and they maintain and change make this book complete. plus, the importance of libraries! life and death are hard and becky chambers knows it. a utopian book without the explicit premise of being one. read it!

This book isn't bad per-say...but I wouldn't read it again and would probably recommend skipping it. This series is best in it's focus of non-human species. This book focuses on a small subset of humans and the end result of their social evolution (not the process of it). The only real fun part of the book is the single non-human character.
