Really interesting book. I liked the structure, the way that it seemed to develop from a bunch of loose threads into an interconnected web. This was my first book in this universe and I enjoyed the worldbuilding, although as an archivist it was sometimes confusing and a bit maddening how that profession had been interpreted into the future.

Wow wow wow!! Becky Chambers, once again, goes out of her way to create a book that is purposefully inclusive, hilarious and scintillating. Ever since I first read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, I knew I had found my new favourite series. Mad props to Becky, I loved every second of this!

"We are all worthy, or no one is."

Slow paced and character dense. But, again Chambers serves up a satisfying and moving story.

Becky Chambers made me love this weird mildly academic treatise on world-building in outer space. But! It has such a big heart! I want so many more stories with these characters but there is nothing for them on AO3 and very little for wayfarers in general!!

The way death and dying are taken seriously and are held at the center of this society! The parallels drawn between death work and sex work as types of care work, and the friendship that grows between Eyas and Sunny! The literal anthropologist Harmogian who writes essays on Exodan culture for each chapter of the book! The way death and breaking down is mirrored in the decay of customs and physical objects, and treated to as much reverence and care as they are!

Plus, great Becky Chambers lines about “if you’re feeling lost, moving to another planet won’t help that. You’ll just be lost on another planet, away from your support system.” 💕💕 ugh my heart I want to spend so much more time in this world
