I like the burning hot angry poems best, and the sexy poems are a close second. I also like the references to orishas and other Africanisms. I think there were a few poems that I didn’t really “get,” especially among the late 80s works. It feels like there is a big shift in tone between “The Black Unicorn” and “Our Dead Behind Us” even though the themes are similar. The emotional content in these poems makes me want to return to her essay about anger.

another foray into poetry — definitely enjoyed this collection more than other authors I’ve tried. though throughout still had a hard time connecting to the more abstract pieces. would say that’s more so a me thing vs a Lorde thing, so looking forward to reading some of her prose next

this is the first time i've ever read any book of poetry cover to cover. i'm attemtping to be as thorough as possible in my search for audre lorde's ideas of self-care. it comes close to the ideas of foucault, wherein it is intertwined with knowing the self, the practice of building an edifice of images that make the self coherent, storytelling, biography, history, myth. the area i found most beautiful in this work were the selections drawn from the black unicorn. black unicorn was clearly the funnest. the words were all perfect there. there's lust, rage, pain, sublimity. i think about how i have aimee cesaire scheduled to do this next with.
