Heat Level: High

Wow. This came out of nowhere with how entertaining it was. I expected to like it, but it exceeded my expectations.

This is a contemporary fantasy (or urban fantasy, but I feel like that genre brings to mind something else). It's set in New Orleans and is kind of like a vampire hunting situation, except it's Fae hunters. The Fae in this are not sexy; they are terrible and scary. So if you're going into this hoping for some sexy Fae, you might want to move on.

I was pleasantly surprised that this was funny. I laughed out loud multiple times. There are pop references so prepare yourself, including lots of Harry Potter references, which were the worst. I personally don't like when books have them and they are borderline cringey. However, most of them were kind of seamless and, if I'm being honest, references that I might even say in real life. So I gave it a pass. (Bonus points for a reference to Jensen Ackles who is top tier for me and I've never seen mentioned in a book.)

The characters were fleshed out and some likeable and some weren't. I liked the main character. Something about her worked for me and I found her funny instead of annoying. I think it could go either way for people though. And Ren... holy shit.... He was something. There were a couple of things that made me think ehhhhhh in his behavior, but they were actually addressed in book so it gets a pass. I loved him.

The romance was top-notch. The tension was thick, the scenes were intense, there was some good steamy parts. I would change nothing. They get a big thumbs up from me.

The plot was predictable to me, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment level.
