I bought this book about 6 years ago from the photographer Janice Rubin but I’d only flicked through it until now. Mikvah is a subject I have been endlessly fascinated with for many years, as I live within a Hasidic community but am not a part of it. The photographs and testimonies of the women who use the mikvah for a variety of reasons are powerful and raw and the anonymity allows them to open up in a way that wouldn’t have proved possible for most otherwise. A stunning collection and a thought provoking exhibition on the power of water for healing and its connection across other religions. As a Christian, water is a dominant symbol when we are baptised, and I love the relationship between water and starting a new chapter in ones life - prominent in both Christianity and from the many testimonies of these Jewish women. 5 stars!
