an idyllic scenery disrupted with chaos.
Graphic: Death
This book, although I didn’t always feel like I understood what was happening, always made me feel something every time I opened it. Maybe you’re not supposed to comprehend it like other books, or maybe I need to give it a couple more reads, but all I know is that I feel like I subconsciously learned lessons from it without even knowing what I was learning.
This book had some really great moments that actually made me chuckle aloud. Picturing the fantastic, weird, and interesting world that Brautigan described throughout the pages was one of my favourite parts about reading In Watermelon Sugar. It’s a 5 star because even though I just set it down, I already want to pick it back up and re-read it.
What an odd but wonderful little book this was.

"In watermelon sugar the deeds were done and done again as my life is done in watermelon sugar."
"I guess you are kind of curious as to who I am, but I am one of those who do not have a regular name. My name depends on you. Just call me whatever is on your mind."
This book is simple yet haunting. I felt like a ghost wandering around iDEATH. Present and distant at the same time.

Finally read 'In Watermelon Sugar', the surrealist book that people mention as one of the strangest they have ever read. Is this it? How is this considered so special?
A society that uses watermelons for everything - windows, clothing and naturally food made out of watermelon sugar, seeds used for making ink, watermelon mixed with trout oil. We follow a community in their calm everyday life, briefly disrupted by INBOIL, a character that seeks to explain the true meaning of the world they live in.
I was hoping to find more consequences of the world they live in, but it was a fairly ordinary story set within this context. Nothing about changes to their anatomy or health, political consequences, how they communicate with other communities, so it made for a lackluster story. I really fail to understand what all the hype is about. It was fine, but ordinary.
I liked some aspects like tigers speaking in their language, the prose being very dialogue heavy and showing rather than telling for the most part (except where the dialogue repeated the narrative) and in general I thought the ideas were good. But I thought the plot was not pushed far enough.
