i have never read a book so bizarre. I’m not really sure what the plot of the book actually was but we got murderous tigers that talk and murdered and ate the protagonists parents, a gang who cut off first their dumbs, then their noses and ears and then the rest of their fingers until they bless to death. and throughout all of this the rest of the characters didn’t bat an eye the most reaction they had was an “oh” and then they moved on with their lives.
there’s kind of a love story (?) where the peat agonist was with a woman named margaret but after she fraternised with aforementioned gang the protagonist leaves her for a much younger girl named paulina and a few months ? year? margaret becomes depressed and kills herself and once again no one gives a shit. Also i think that maybe experimented on the protagonist while she was with the gang but then again i feel asleep while reading it and woke up listening to experiment on me by halsey so maybe i just imagined it.

the one saving grace of this book is the writing which is beautiful

I read this for the month of Watermelon:July. It imagery used was quite weird but very peculiar and eccentric. The story happens in a dystopian timeline in a place called iDeath. The sun rises as a different colour each day and everything is made out of Watermelon Sugar. As for the animals there are trouts in the rivers that are only inches wide. There were tigers who could talk. Most of them were hunted and were gone extinct as they were dangerous. The part where the protagonist's story when he was a kid, the two tigers who came up his shack and ate his parents and helped him with his artimatic was so weird and funny. Everything in iDeath is made out of Watermelon Sugar which seems to have the ability to be molded into literally anything--- watermelon seeds ink, watermelontrouts oil, watermelon window glasses, watermelon bridges and even the normal sugar.

There is nothing particular for the readers to take from the book or to learn. I thoroughly enjoyed and relaxed listening to the audiobook since it was an interesting read with much hype built on around it. Even Harry Style's "Watermelon Sugar" was based on this novel.

I loved the audiobook version. The narrator's voice was really soothing and interesting.

In Watermelon Sugar is a quick read. There is a haunting tone all throughout with the subject matter being just as haunting. Brautigan writes with mystery and darkness but a lightheartedness as well that makes for an interesting read. This is a sad, funny, strange book.

I think while I was reading this, I kept trying to look for parallels to today's world as well as "a point". I was drastically trying to figure out if this was set in our world in the future. However, I now realize this book is timeless and without something that roots it to the reality of today. Therefore, the point is that while things start out simple and beautiful, this dystopian society which has seemed to eliminate poverty and need, is nonetheless still plagued with terrible issues. People are people and will do dumb things. The End.

Choppy yet rambling. Pretentious yet completely lacking a message. I can't deny that the description of the setting was intriguing, even beautiful at times. But I walked away from this work with nothing else.
