My main problem with the book was the pacing. It was hard to get into but once it did, the mystery was great to unravel! It definitely felt like the gothic novels I’ve read before, so it is aptly titled. There is some character development, but it’s more about the story. I loved the reason for the mystery at the end and it was very new.

Id recommend this book to people who enjoy a slow build and a touch of spookiness. I wouldn’t consider this horror by any means, but it can be creepy. I can understand the hype this book created and am glad I read it.

Honestly this was hard to review. It’s a well written book that evokes a lot of emotions.

It had such gross imagery at times I would say “ew” instinctively. It was also very disturbing, and the amount of content warning I tagged is a little ridiculous.

But it was a book that had me curious what was actually going on. It kept escalating as it slowly unraveled. I don’t normally read horror books but this book was such a scary concept combining so many different ways to freak you out.

Genuinely terrifying 🍄🍄

This book is slow and creeping. I got halfway through and almost didn’t finish reading it. I’m glad I did though, it really picks up in the last third.

I loved the writing - which is why I stuck through it. Sometimes the descriptions felt long-winded but it really painted a picture of the environment. Noemi was a great character and I loved uncovering the mysteries of this strange and twisted family/house with her.

I wonderful gothic horror novel. The writing is incredible and the imagery that is developed through this is beautifully bone-chilling. The ending was very fast but appropriate for the events that occurred leading up to it. There are some unanswered questions but I am not upset that they all weren’t answered. A mystery still exists and the reader can determine for themselves what they think.
