I had a really nice review all written here but then this site shit the bed and I lost it. I'm not going to try to recreate that review now. It's too late. Suffice it to say, this book is good.

Read it.

I really enjoyed this read.
Often I find women can be written less well by men but this wasn’t the case here - Renee really had her own personality.
I enjoyed the twists and turns and from about halfway through I couldn’t put it down!

I enjoyed this, as I've enjoyed every Michael Connelly book I've read - although I think this is at the upper end of the relatively few books of his that I've thus far read. It's a police procedural, very crisp, taut, no nonsense. There's a very capable, spirited and smart protagonist - Renée Ballard. She works the night shift and the book centres around two serious crimes - an assault victim left for dead, and a mass shooting at a nightclub. These cases, and others, form the basis of a gripping, labyrinthine plot that features some clever investigative work, internal department politics, betrayals, corruption, and a genuine sense of jeopardy.  Even though there are multiple characters, and multiple cases, I always knew where I was in the novel - I knew who was who, what was what - I found it easy to follow, and with so much going on that's no mean feat - it's a testament to how cleanly written and well-plotted, well-structured the novel is.  It's very good, and very skillfully done.

This was a very good first in series that introduces Renee Ballard. It's very similar to Connelly's Bosch and Lincoln Lawyer series. I listened to the audiobook edition, and while the narration wasn't perfect, the reader's somewhat gritty voice was a nice fit for Ballard. I'd recommend this one, in audio or print.

A new character for Michael Connelly. A faced paved crime novel, will see how this character develops in later books. I'm just glad he didn't go down the "daughter of Bosch" path

Solid entry in the Canon

I like that Connelly created a detective who has character traits we've seen before, but doesn't act like every other detective out there. There is familiarity, while also an originality to her. I would have liked some overlap with Bosch. Not necessarily Harry, but some other name or connecting aspect.
