For those comments I read before buying this book, that had me hesitating for how long it was and how people said it dragged, IT DOES NOT, take the time and read and understand the vast amount of backstory this masterpiece holds, there was not a page that made me bored, on the contrary, it called for more and there I sat and there I read and time passed unnoticed, this my friends is why I live in books. My mind whirled as I sat and read, the ravishing writing and the evocative narrative. This book meets that special shelf for the extraordinary.

not the best fantasy Ive read by any means, but i had a decent amount of fun reading it, & I stayed up til 4am finishing the last 350 pages so that counts for something! I laughed out loud a few times for sure, and the writing is beautiful, as expected of Laini Taylor. this was my first one by her, and I have no regrets. it took a while to get a grip on the world and characters, and i definitely zoned out a lot. I'm really glad I read it though, and I will definitely be reading Muse of Nightmares.

Review on 3rd reread, July 2023:
"The end of wondering, he thought, but not of wonder. That was just beginning"

This is one of those books where rereads are BETTER than the 1st read. Because you are able to discern every detail that has meaning in that space where the story gathers (*pun intended).
Because you find and appreciate every beautiful quote you find -and there's and endless list of them.

Sadest of all: none of my friends has read this!!! WHYYYYY!?

First Review on 1st read
The space where his legend was gathering up words grew larger. Because this story was not over yet.

There are those books that from page 2 you know you're gonna give 5 stars to, but you wait till you finish reading because of a matter of respect. Some of those books also make you aware that you're going to be enchanted by them in a magical way even if you can't read them in a 2 day sprint but a 20 day no-time slow motion. And a small amount of those also give you the feeling that you're going to be devastated because of them, in a way of no recovering, but still pull you to read and enjoy while you still can.
This is also my personal proof that books you absolutely adore are far more difficult to review than the ones you don't. Because your mind insists in making you write "NO WHAT THE ACTUAL F*** NO NO NO AMAZING AMAZINB ASDHSDLFDJLKFADS NO NO NO NON ONO CAN YOU BELIEVE IT YES I WAS EXPECTING SOMETHING LIKE THAT BUT NO NO NO NO NO NO NON O NO NO NO NO NO NO WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTT THE SECOND BOOK NEEDS TO COME NOW RN LAINI HURRY UP PLEASE BUT ARG IT'S GONNA DESTROY ME EVEN MORE THE SECOND PART ISN'T IT? JKLFASDAERREWOWER ______________________DEAD__________________________"
Pretty accurate, don't you think? So how do you make something even slightly rational out of all of that? well, I hardly can, since I'm not a good reviewer and I just looked like I'm 15. Yeap.
So what to say in a more intelligent way about Strange the dreamer?
What can I say? No. What will I say?
I'll say Laini Taylor has some magic in her fingers that can make you glued to the page even in a 10000 word-description (not that she does that).
I'll say that Lazlo Strange is one of the best characters I ever read and that I can identify with.
I'll say that I know this was the quote that broke me (SPOILER):
There was an important piece missing: to hold Sarai in his arms. (...) If there was some providence or cosmis will, (...) then they had to grant this part, too.
And... it could be argued that they did

I'll say that "The muse of nightmares" needs to be released whenever it is going to be the perfect book, and give these people a happy ending in some way, because I'm a Dreamer and I cannot live in the nightmare the other situation would imply
I'll say that you read this book, but also know that there's no coming back after it.
But read this book.
Because in your eyes, what will there be?

“And that's how you go on. You lay laughter over the dark parts. The more dark parts, the more you have to laugh. With defiance, with abandon, with hysteria, any way you can.”

Lovely, strange, and heartbreaking. Laini Taylor makes you feel as if you're in a beautiful, and often haunting, dream - which, really, is kind of the point. This book is predictable in places and surprising in others, and I would recommend it to everyone who loves fantasy worlds and gorgeous prose.
