This is my first Trudi Canavan book and I was happy to learn that it's the prequel to the black magician trilogy which I haven't read yet and now I can read them all in sequence. It was a great read, a perfect start to my holiday, it was nice to read a stand alone book for once. I loved the characters and their relationships with each other and how they developed through the book, it did feel like a swift ending though.

This is very much written at a young adult level. It was well-written but could have used some editing to cut some length and tighten up the story. It became very repetitive and slow through the middle of the book.

Up until about a quarter of the way through this book I thought it was enjoyable. At some time after that though, I became bored and disinterested. I'll definitely be sending this off to the second hand book store and not adding it to my permanent collection.
