Beautiful. Just beautiful. This book's writing was very well done and just amazing. The characters were perfect and the protagonists had the most splendid personalities. I was very interested in the plot of the novel, for I honestly had never heard of the St. Louis before reading this. But, no matter how beautiful of a book this was, I did tear up a few times as it was a very emotional read.

I think that in the current political climate, this book and this story is a must read.

I had never heard of the story of the St. Louis or any of the other ships that were part of this horrific tragedy and oversight. Very well researched and a great story, although the start was a little slow, by the end I could not put it down and finished it one day.

I recivied this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

3.5. Based on actual events I knew little about with the St. Louis.

The German Girl centers on the true story of the transatlantic cruise liner the SS St Louis that sailed from Germany to Cuba with roughly 900 Jews abroad trying to seek safe haven in Cuba before WWII. Through the eyes of a 12 year-old-girl we witness what happened to the passengers on the ship and the lose that is still resonating through the generations.

I found it very interesting reading the accounts of the ship (a story I was not familiar with) and wished that there was more focus in the book on its actual voyage and the aftermath. Instead we are told the story by a girl who in all honesty was rather obnoxious and unlikable. That may be the reason why I couldn't make a connection to her and her family and found her lacking.
I think this book should be targeting YA readers and that a nonfiction account of the voyage might be more interesting for adults. I wish I could give it a 2.5.

This book broke my heart. Even though I knew the story of the St. Louis passenger ship that fled Germany in 1939 with almost all Jewish people aboard I never knew the details. The story follows Hannah a 12 year old Jewish girl from Berlin born into wealth who was aboard the ship bound for Cuba. The other story involves Anna a 12 year old girl in NYC. I don't want to reveal more details but suffice to say it is the best kind of historical fiction.

Really enjoyed the true historical aspects of this forgotten part of the past. Sad tale.
