Good writing, but hard to like. Even thought I read it fast, I still wanted to put it away. You want and don't want to be there

I read this book a while ago and so this review will be the imprints of the book that have been left on me, rather than an in-depth review.

Adichie's writing was hard to get into and made getting into the plot quite hard. As someone who was a slow-reader at this point (I have certainly got quicker through the year), I definitely found it hard to read and it took me a while to get through.

The book was also dealing with some very heavy themes and looked at the way that Kambili interacts with them as a child. I think it is interesting the way that Adichie portrays Kambili's thoughts on the occurrences and she knows that they are wrong, but her agency as a young teen is minimised significantly, and so it is interesting to see how Kambili lives and copes with the trauma.

I probably wouldn't read this again although enjoyed some parts of the novel and there was a small plot twist at the end which was good. If you like something that is a bit mundane and at a slower-pace, with darker elements in, then this would definitely be for you.
