A great psychological thriller. What a talented writer. I suspected the ending, but was really thrown for a loop by the last few chapters in the book from the perspective of one of the main characters who had been written about throughout the book, but never heard from in his own voice.

The readers on the audio book were wonderful.

I'm so glad I discovered this author. I knew after reading The Nothing Man that I wanted to read more of her books, and this second one was also very good. This author is very good as writing character centered psychological suspense, a type of book that I love if done right. I enjoyed the slow build of this story and I thought the characters were very well written. It kept me guessing for a while, but I realized how things were going to end up somewhere in the middle of the book. That being said, it still kept me reading because I wasn't sure I was right. If you enjoy this type of book then I recommend this one and The Nothing Man. I'm looking forward to reading more of Catherine Ryan Howard's books.

“Did he really think I’d escaped all this intact? That I could love him and he could kill people and then I could just go on and live a normal life? That I could have those things now, no harm done? Didn’t he realise what he’d done?”

Well that was a bumpy ride.

Will Hurley- The Canal Killer, Murdered his girlfriend's best friend, Liz when he was about 19 years old. In a pych ward in stead of a prison. He claims he is innocent and will only speak to Allison, so the Gardaí go find Allison and bring her to him.

Allison-Ex girlfriend to Will. Forced back to Dublin where it all happened due to Will wanting to see her to prove his innocence because of a copycat killer. She does not believe he is innocent and does not know how or if she can help him. She starts to believe towards the end that she ended putting Will in prison because of her statement all those years back to the Gardaí.

This novel kept me guessing all the way through. At one point my mind was like could Allison kill her best friend? I especially loved the ending of the novel, that was a huge twist that I did not see coming. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

I didn’t love the writing style so that knocked it down to 4 stars. I otherwise loved this book and would recommend for a good thriller! I’d suggest physically reading it over audiobook because I found it difficult to follow sometimes
