Thanks to Netgalley for a sneak peek of this book. From what I could see I give the start a 3.5 stars.

This seems intriguing! I'll definitely be looking for a copy. I'm interested to see how Eva's story plays out, and how she will gain the knowledge to use her magick.

The characters are interesting, her friendship with Falun has my notice already.

No fault of the book. It was just easy to tell two chapters in that this was a book that I was no longer interested in.

Oh my goodness, loved this! Eva is such a great character, she's spunky and loyal and I really enjoyed her development as a person.

Also, the discussions on colonialism and family and history are AWESOME. and the magic system? Really perfectly fascinating. Definitely looking forward to the sequel.

I really enjoyed this one! I received a copy from the December FairyLoot! This wasn’t a book I’d heard of before, but I typically love when I get books I haven’t heard of before. So glad this was the book they chose!

It is set in a fantasy world similar to Africa. It has Humans, Fey, Bloodkin and Khimaer all rolled into this world. It’s very faced paced and a quick read. The characters are interesting and the Magick system is pretty unique.

I would have liked the love story to unfold slower. It wasn’t quite enemies to lovers put along that line. I felt it just unfolded to quickly. I would have also liked for the relationships between the characters to have had a little more story. The relationships aside from the love story was also rushed and it went from hey I just met you to feeling like they’d always known each other. It was missing something.

But overall it was interesting and a fun read. I want to see where this story goes in the next installment!

*I ROUNDED UP FOR THIS ONE BECAUSE THE ISSUE WAS SO MINOR THAT I CAN LET IT SLIDE*

Not to make a stupid pun, but this book was a JOY to read. I'll see myself out.

The setting was one of the best parts of it for me, set in the lush and vibrant fantasy world that Joy modeled after North Africa. So many cultural references and inspirations from relevant African nations, not to mention the Queendoms instead of Kingdoms, inspired a mythos and story with no parallel.

Our main character, Eva, felt absolutely likable and we love a good underdog story. She's a fighter, survivor, and a victim all at the same time. The layers of the story were complex, filled with unforeseen alliances, betrayals, and reveals. Most of all, the story touched on the complex dynamic of sister rivalry and broken homes. It felt refreshingly modern in its content, despite the far-away setting of magic and mystics.

If I could mention a small peeve why I didn't give a 5-star, it would be that the King played such a small role in the story and that contradicted the larger build-up that he got. It had an anti-climactic edge to it.

I rarely read YA, but the beautiful cover hooked me when I saw it in the store. I love this story. As an older sister to two younger sisters and someone who no longer relates to her siblings or mother at all, I felt Eva's pain. The characters and their relationships really stuck with me, and the magic system is amazing. I could see the real-world and serious topics interweaved in and appreciated how well Joy executed them. Overall, I loved this book and can't wait to read what happens next in book 2. This is an author I will recommend to reader friends.
