His caseworker was one of those people who say the word “escapism” as if it’s a moral failing, a regrettable hobby, a mental-health diagnosis. As if escape is not, in itself, one of the highest order of magics they’ll ever see in their miserable mortal lives, right up there with true love and prophetic dreams and fireflies blinking in synchrony on a June evening.
Given that I accepted the Hugo for this as Alix Harrow was unable to attend, it seemed only polite to read it!
This is free to download online (get it from Apex, please, where it was first published and not any of the other sites that have cloned it). It’s the sort of short story I wish I could show my students and say ‘Look! This is the sort of magic you can do with 5000 words!’. Unfortunately, whilst it’s a very light tale on the surface, it has some content warning for suicide which is so well drawn that it would probably upset the Board and have half the students reconsidering their decision to stay. This is because it’s a tale about escape. It’s extremely deft and I’m very glad it won the Hugo, and I will be looking for more of Alix’s writing.
And it was a great acceptance speech she wrote, so thank you.

Rating specifically for "A Witch's Guide to Escape," Hugo 2019 short story nominee.
This is a moving story of the power of libraries and librarians. Librarians in this universe are literally witches who use books to shape the minds and lives of their patrons. The bulk of the story centers around an obviously troubled young man who is helped reach his destiny by the narrator, a witch-librarian who doesn't always follow the rules. Although there are some minor structural flaws with the story, I think it is the best of the short stories nominated this year.
A truly lovely story about the power of stories, as read from here: https://apex-magazine.com/a-witchs-guide-to-escape-a-practical-compendium-of-portal-fantasies/

My rating is only for Witches Guide to Escape. The Goodreads name was changed to include the whole issue after I read this.
Librarians are witches who can smell what kind of book a person needs. Books stir under our attention. This was an incredible short story.
