A high fantasy that also becomes a sci-fi adventure

I'm not a fan of most fantasy. I had this on my list a decade ago, when it was included in the BBC's Big Read Top 100 reads. IN trying to complete the list, this has finally made it to the top of my 'to read' list .

I audio-read this, which probably wasn't the best way to access the story, as I did find I lost track of characters a lot, mixed the young men up.

This starts simply, with an adolescent boy becoming apprentice to a magician and falling in love with a princess. Hia friends also are given their own storylines, but I did find myself driffting at times after the aliens came into the story.

Characters become slaves, some die, many are injured - and there are some rather graphic battle and death scenes.

I'm glad I got through it, though as I said, it was a slog at times as it's not usually the sort of book I crave.

The writing flowed, though listening to it, I did lose track of which character we were focused on at any one time.

If you're a fan of Game of Thrones, this could be a read to continue the theme.

This book was pretty meandering. Also how was it about magicians? Seemed to mostly be about warfare.
