Alice in Wonderland is a long-standing favourite of mine. Alice images and quotes are ubiquitous and I think this led to my thinking I remembered it better than I actually did!
Rediscovering Alice with Audrey was an absolute joy!
All of the wonderful scenes and characters -Alice, the Cheshire Cat, The Hatter, the White Rabbit, the March Hare, the Queen etc - were wonderfully brought to live by the narration.
A lot of the clever wordplay and puns or modified version of old children's rhymes were beautifully explained and the Audrey guide was a wonderful invitation to explore further and disappear down your own rabbit hole!

There's a lot more depth to Alice than I had remembered - a child thrown into a world where she is constantly changing and is never quite sure of the rules or how people will react to her and what she says. Isn't that a perfect summation of the often confused feeling of growing childhood. Alice is asked to ponder who she really is, how she's changed during her adventure and where does she want to end up - some philosophical questions for a young girl, hence why this book resonates so much with adults. There's a nostalgia to it that feels reassuring and affirms memories of childhood confusions and imagination.

Upon this reading, I was struck by how Alice actually matures during her adventures. At the beginning she appals the animals, talking about her cat Dinah had eaten many of their kind, however by the end of the book she is more aware of how her words may affect those around her and she thinks more before she speaks.

I had also completely forgotten the reflections of her sister at the end - it makes the book all the more poignant that Alice is destined to grow up and perhaps lose the wonder and imagination of her childhood.

I loved rediscovering this book and recommend a re-read to anyone who feels like they "know" this classic.

I'm throughly canvassed that this story is something spacial. It's most assuredly not flat and the characters form quite a procession through Alice's admittedly muddled subconscious and possibly my own. I love the puns and childish cast of characters. Looking forward to sharing this with my kids soon.

Update 8/31/2020: Just read this with my kids and we were all delighted. We are also enjoying Robert Sabuda's pop-up book of the same. My 4 year old keeps singing around the house (to my husband's dismay) "beauuuuuuutiful soooouuuup! beauuuuuuutiful soooouuuup! Sooooup of the eeeeevening! Beauuuuuuutiful souuuuup!"

Read this aloud to my kids for the second time as well as my 9 year old niece for her first time. My seven year old and I agreed it is even better the second time. I think we will be rereading this one again and again.
