Intriguing premise but it gets overly convoluted and I couldn’t stand the way Turton wrote about Lord Ravencourt — a fat character portrayed as nothing but appetite.

Intrigue novatrice mais quelque peu perturbante ! C'est compliqué à suivre et à comprendre le dénouement. Mais j'ai apprécié le lire.

I still don't understand how he was popping back into the other people when he fell asleep

minus 0.5 stars for the gratuitous fatphobia section. Although the author does a good job of making you forget that section.

Wow that was a wild ride. I recommend going into this book not knowing anything. That's what I did and oh my goodness, I lost count of the times I said "Oh sh*t" or "wtf" or "wait, what is going on?" I couldn't put the book down, because I was dying to know what happened next. This was a stay-up-way-past-bedtime read for me. Overall it was a bit odd and I'm not completely sold on the reason for why all of [it] was happening, but you know what, I had a great time. What more can you ask for.

I struggled to get into this book but tried to continue with it as it was for a book club. But I just couldn’t get past the author’s rampant fatphobia when it came to Ravencourt. Had to DNF it for my own sanity

DID NOT FINISH: 4%

I recognize that this is the author's first novel, however the inexperience comes through in the prose. It tries so hard to sound 'poetic' and 'literary' that the writing comes across as clunky and melodramatic. My breaking point was in the second chapter when the narrator kept referring to a man he did not know as "my salvation" before randomly switching the epithet to "my companion" and then right back to "my salvation". This was not only annoying, but a drag to read and a blaring neon light to a nubile author that either required more drafts or a better editor. Even before getting to any of the other POVs or repeated days, the narration was repetitive and full of filler. Within a few paragraphs of each other, one character is messing with his pant leg in two separate, slightly different variations for no reason but to shove an action in-between dialogue.

It is not just the book that feels slapped together before its ready, but the publishing itself. One of the first things I noticed on opening the book is a giant paragraph of shutter stock credits for each icon on the cover. So I went to look back at the cover and noticed that half of their copy and pasted icons were off-center. Which sounds picky and anal to include in a book review, but anyone with experience with art direction and graphic design would know that kind of mistake would not go out anywhere with quality control. Were it self-published, it would be understandable, but under Bloomsbury it feels like the entire product was rushed for publication.
