Lover Avenged

J.R. Ward

4.14 AVERAGE

This one was good; definitely an improvement upon the last few. I liked both Rehvenge and Ehlena. I did think the sympath story, while brought forward from the last book, was a little to "out of left field".

This series is one of my guilty pleasures. Mind candy with utterly no redeeming social value. That being said, it was purely delightful. Rehvenge's story is sordid, he is half-sympath, a pariah to the vampire race. Dependent on dopamine to keep his emotions under wraps, he is falling in love with vampire nurse Ehlena. Several other subplots wind around as well, with some being resolved and others continuing to linger. I am anxiously awaiting the next entertaining entry in the series.

That was a great read. The book is thick, but full of so much! I loved Rehvenge and Ehlena, although I think Ms. Ward made Rehvenge almost too sweet in this book. I liked him before, but he was less of a bad-ass and more of a sweetheart in Lover Avenged. I suppose it was her way of making a drug lord pimp symphath into a hero. I liked the interaction between Wrath and Beth, especially since their story wasn't all that for me. It was nice to see them interact now that Ms. Ward has her groove on. I don't think she was quite there with Dark Lover.

I enjoyed reading the train wreak that was John and Xhex. It kinda broke my heart. I can't decide if John was just being a big baby or if it was justified. I guess it's a bit of both. It seems that he got his head out of his ass at the end though, so I really look forward to his and Xhex's story. Should be good.

It can't decide if I liked this or Lover Unbound best out of the series. I definitely liked how this one ended better. But I think I like Vishous just a tad bit more than Rehvenge.

I like Rehv much more after reading this book but it moved kind of slow. Beginning to think the best of this series has came and went but I will keep reading!

I was a little unsure of Rehvenge before reading this book, but this one gets an extra star just for making me love a character that I wasn't really fussed about before. Pimp, drug lord, club owner, murderer, liar and J.R. Ward managed to make me have empathy for him. Elehna was a great character as well, strong willed, loyal and kind-hearted. I felt very sad for her situation and when she lost her job.
The fight in the Symphath Colony was very well done. Lash is turning into a bit of a Mr. O character with his female obsession and thinking that they love him, but I was pleased when he half-offed the Symphath Princess. Even though he spent most of the book driving around and barking orders at people he does make the Lessers seem more of a threat than they have in the previous books. I loved having the focus back on Wrath and Beth - I didn't realise how much I had missed them and up until now we haven't really seen Wrath take to the king role as much as he did here. And George... how cute.
I'm not quite sure who the 'lover avenged' was though - there was a lot of avenging going on. I'm also still not exactly sure exactly what Symphaths are and why everyone hates them so much and why half-breeds like Rehv and Xhex have to go to such great lengths to hide their identities. Maybe I missed something earlier on in the series. Do they kill people whilst eating sins? Do they make people kill themselves like Rehv did with the Princess? Also there wasn't any mention of Rehv's attachment to Marissa from book 4. I'm wondering whether Ward felt that this story had already played out or if it wasn't mentioned because Rehv was so ready to make Marissa his Shellan and was quite reluctant with Elehna? Hmmm...
But it is still John Matthew who makes me keep reading these books and boy did he have an evolution in Lover Avenged. His first time with Xhex and the way she handled it, Tohr's return, going missing and coming back again. No wonder he went off the rails. I think he had done well to hold on as long as he did. My heart breaks for him. I'm so excited to finally get to Lover Mine and hopefully he gets the HEA he deserves.

Alright y'all, I won't pussy foot around it - I was disappointed with this book. As I mentioned in my Goodreads discussion I think a lot of it had to do with my expectations. With Lover Enshrined I went in not expecting much based on a lot of blogger reviews; most people said it was their least favorite in the series. Because I started it with such low expectations, I actually ended up liking it a lot more than I had anticipated.

With Lover Avenged I went in expecting more, something better than Lover Enshrined and was pretty disappointed. I really didn't love Rhev all that much. *ducks* I enjoyed him in the other books but as a main hero he kinda fell flat for me. As others have mentioned I loved him with Bella, Nalla, and his mother. But with Ehlena...meh. I actually liked Ehlena a lot though. I thought her reaction to finding out the truth bout Rhev to be pretty realistic. I'da been pissed too. To me she was one of the stronger heroines of the series, but I still just didn't LOVE their story.

One thing I really enjoyedwas the Wrath/Beth storyline. We haven't seen that much of them since Dark Lover and it was nice to see more of their relationship post-HEA.

I think another reason I didn't like this one as well is because aside from the Wrath/Beth sub-plot I didn't care much for the other ongoing plots. There wasn't enough with John/Xhex (I know Lover Mine, can't wait!), there was like NO TEAM QHUAY in this one. *stomps foot & pouts* Now, I almost always just skim the lesser sections. I'm paying a little more attention now that Lash is Mr. Evil. But there just wasn't enough keeping me engaged in this one.

Overall, one of my least favorite in the series. Actually when I think about it, I enjoyed Lover Enshrined more because of all the other overarching sub-plots. It's official, this one is my least favorite of the series. It was just not satisfying enough.
adventurous challenging dark emotional hopeful sad tense slow-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

okay, this might be my best and worst in the series so far and this is saying a lot.
in this book, we follow Rehv who is a half symphath, half vampire who falls in love with a vampire. when she finds out about his dirty means of income, so goes all mariey carey on him.
with that going on, we go back and forth with other people in the book, wrath blindness, Xhex and John's non-existent relationship (of course as you would expect, just because she doesnt want to have anything to do with him, he decides that f**king anything in a skirt would help him through his emotional pain) (like we haven't seen that before)

Just read this again in preaparation for Lover Mine....I love Rehvenge!! This book is fabulous (even though there are a few too many plots to get your head around in the first read of this book!) Rehv is the perfect tortured hero and Ehlena is a good choice as his mate (even if she does start the book as a bit of a wet lettuce). The lesser stuff is more interesting in this book and the sub-plot wets your appetite for John Matthews book. All around a good read!

This installment is definitely in my favorites. There was so much emotion packed into this book. Ehlena and Rehvenge are one of my favorite couples. Their relationship was so much more developed than any of the others. Their story was captivating. Also, I love all of the characters. The Brothers are amazing and I have grown to love all of them. The banter is hilarious.

The ending was really corny and ended like all the others. The rest of the book was way better than the last couple chapters. Also, I skimmed Lash's parts. I have never liked the lessers' POV.

All in all, I love this series. Yes it is cheesy. I love it because of the characters. They really make the story for me.
