3.35 AVERAGE

It was a dissapointment to me. The story is well written but I was expecting more of it... something that would make me run and tell all my friends: please read this book! It was just not my cup of tea.

My rating: 3.5 stars

This was a weird book. I had a hard time knowing what star value to give it. I decided on 3.5 stars and rounded up since there were many things I liked about this book but various things I did not necessarily like.

I liked reading about what it must have been like driving one of the really early automobiles (in 1904).
Even though this was not a religious book, and maybe it was even an anti-religious book, there are some interesting religion-overtones in this book and some good stories about Jesus and the writers of the Bible.

This book had three parts that took place in three different time periods but they are all related somehow. I enjoyed the second part the most but still found it awfully weird at the end. I suppose it might have been more of a ghost story than anything else, but still… odd…

In part one and part three, there were many long parts that I felt could have been removed to shorten the story some. But overall, I enjoyed the writing of this book and found most of it interesting.

The narrator did a decent job of changing his voice for different characters, especially characters with different nationalities.

I was drawn into it by the quirkiness of the characters. It got more and more confusing to me, but I appreciated the imagination.

I almost quit reading this book, but decided to stick with it. It is undoubtedly a tedious (at times) and odd (at all times) book but I really liked it in the end.

Oh Mr. Martel, you trickster, making us read yet another ridiculous book.

I wasn't sure how I felt about this one until the last part. Really loved the ending!
dark emotional reflective sad slow-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I have no interest in any of the characters so it wasn't worth wading through the weirdness of this book. I don't mind weird books as long as they have an interesting plot or characters - something to make the read worth it - but this book has neither so down she goes.

3.5

This was kinda a weird book but very enjoyable! Martel is an amazing writer that paints such a beautiful picture with his words that I was mesmerized by the story! I have a weird relationship with magical realism but I enjoyed how the author built this one up!

The book takes place in the High Mountains of Portugal, with three different but connected stories that takes place in the span of decades. I love historical fiction that connects between generations! It starts with a young main journeying up to the mountains to find something in a church, and then shows this connection throughout the book. I loved the mysterious connections that the reader had to put together. The beginning started out a bit slow but definitely picked up! I also loved the Canadian connection with one of the characters living in Canada and then going back to his homeland, Portugal! I definitely recommend this book if you love historical fiction with hints of magical realism!
