Watching a bunch of fading landed gentry behaving badly has a kind of vicious Real Housewives feel to it which could be fun at times. These people could not bear to let anyone else be happy and were constantly cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

However, it's kind of blunted a bit by the distance the literary device used to tell gives it (some parts are like Lockwood relating a letter written by Cathy as narrated to him by Ellen) and the ending sort of runs out of steam.

I have been intimidated by books from the 19th century as I was concerned I could not understand the lingo, the slang, etc. However at times wordy and using old slang Wuthering Heights is incredibly easy to read. It helped to have the glossary in the back especially for the cleverly written Northern dialect. The story is gripping and I love that it is told from Mrs Dean as we may never know her bias of those involved.

What I understood from the culture around this story was that it was one of love, and romance. Well I believe those who created movies, songs, etc of this novel's contents were incredibly amiss in doing so and therefore misrepresent this story in it's entirety.

If you are nervous about 19th century novels like I was, I urge you to give this one a shot as it is absolutely an incredible story that I wish I had given a chance to sooner.

Wow, where to start. So this WASN'T the lovely gothic romance l was expecting and had been led to believe. Having slogged through this book for the last 6 days I feel as if I need to be contacting some kind of customer service department to after refund for the time I just wasted reading this book.

If I hadn't agreed to Buddy read this with another person I would probably have stopped reading after two or three chapters. The language is difficult, yes but considering the time period in which it was written you can understand why it is so difficult to read. That was the type of language that they use and that was the type of language used in novels and the written work so I can overcome that and look past it and after a while you do stop seeing the different language than what we used today but still the themes and plot of this whole novel in my honest opinion ridiculous and there is no way a book of this calibre would stand should it be released in the modern day.

The entire cast is full of selfish, evil, narcissistic assholes who show no respect to anybody else and with no self-respect at all for themselves.  The whole novel is basically a combination of child abuse, over indulgence, emotional abuse, and unrestrained anger issues . None of this is healthy and that is amplified by the fact that almost every single character in this book ends up meeting and timely demise in one form or another.

I can understand why people call it a classic and, I suppose, if you enjoy reading about social classes and interactions between people of different classes and the way the world seemed to work back in those days, then you'd probably have a field trip with this book. But for any normal person, either going into this believing that is a romance or, looking for a nice classic book to read, I would recommend that you pick up something by one of the other Brontรซ sisters because Wuthering Heights is not enjoyable, not remotely intriguing, nor interesting, and has no other pull to it other than the fact that people have bigger it up for centuries.

That is the only reason this book is still around and still being talked about - because Emily is connected with Charlotte and Anne so the Brontรซ name stands out and holds her above the rest. And for the fact that this book has been around for centuries so people assume it is a classic and portrays a perfect picture of the world back then. I do not find this to be true and in all honesty, I would never recommend this book to anybody.

I almost can't believe I've finally read this. It's a book I've meant to get to for about 10 years and it's been another three since I actually bought it because it was on sale in TKMaxx.
It's always a strange experience reading a classic for the first time because there's so much cultural context which/that comes along with it. I only had a vague idea of the story because I've never seen an adaptation so it challenged a lot of my preconceived notions about it. I knew it was gothic but somehow didn't imagine it would be so unrelentingly miserable. I was expecting the characters to be unlikeable but didn't know the plot was solely made up of people being awful to each other. I was also under the impression that Heathcliff had some redeemable qualities which made him a troubled but nevertheless still romantic lead but I didn't feel that was the case.
At first I was pretty confused about how all the characters were related but luckily this edition includes a family tree. While it does sort of spoil what happens, it actually made me more intrigued to see how the story would unfold. I don't think I'd have been that interested in the plot had I not had some idea of how it as going to end.
So while I can't say I really enjoyed it that much, I am pleased I've finally read it.
