Frizzy had me in my feelings. Marlene has curly hair. her mom forces her to straighten it, Over the course of the book she goes on a journey of self-discovery, identity and growth. As a white reader, I cannot fathom the depth of colorism and hurt and harm white beauty standards have on Black and People of Color. This book through it's text and words shows this and is relatable.
Marlene is going to be the person she will be, and her family has to accept her.
Parents want to keep their kids safe. Generational trauma is real. Claribel Ortega is one of the best writers out there.
