I have a couple bones to pick with this one.
One: Who the hell was the cursed king? not Airk. There was a prophecy about him (of which we are not certain, because the phoenix who made it was no longer a phoenix at the time, so it could be the woman just said that to save Airk), but that's not a curse. Phyteios? I don't think so. I’m not even sure curses exist in this world.
Two: Phyteios was a disappointment in the end. The final battle happens off the page and we kinda sorta experience it through Angelika’s eyes, except she sees nothing of it. So we don’t get to see it either.
Three: Giving all the power to one sister (who had it already, just gave it away in an action that shouldn’t have been possible) was also a disappointment.
Four, the affirmation that dragon females’ infertility is a punishment for some dragon king’s deeds didn’t sit well with me. But don’t worry, because Angelika “fixes” them. I mean, no woman has value if she can’t have children, right? (That’s sarcasm, in case you didn’t pick it up).
Five: It wasn’t enough to have a magically overpowered sister, no, we needed her to also be politically overpowered. Airk’s speech in the epilogue went something like this: “Okay, two things: First, No High King, because one person having all the power is not good. Let’s have a council. Second: Forget what I just said, we’re having a High QUEEN! YAASS!” How is having a High Queen with a King’s council any different than having a High King with a King’s Council?
Six: How was it that nobody, absolutely no dragon or phoenix knew that dragons had come from the first phoenix? Didn’t they have any kind of record? Oral tradition? Freaking legends? I found that hard to believe. They had the legend that whoever mated a phoenix was to be High King, after all. And why was there ever only one? That never got explained.
Seven: Airk’s attitude, and his hot-cold behavior, got very annoying. To the point that I wished Angelika just went and mated some other dragon. I ended up skipping some of the spice because I just wasn’t feeling the connection to them as a couple.

Overall, I found it entertaining, though the other books were better.

I really enjoyed this last book! I feel like things actually happened with stopping Pytheios finally!

This story centers around Angelika, the dormant phoenix, and Airk, a White Clan dragon.

Airk is just lovely. So broody and moody. I mean I get it, being locked away in a cell for centuries, I would be grumpy too and basically have zero social skills. It was neat to see him come out of his shell. He starts out rather stiff and formal, which I actually liked, and then began to learn more about modern language and modern technology, and in turn became less stiff and a bit more vocal about his thoughts and feelings, especially around Angelika.

Now, Angelika, I liked. I mean I appreciated how tough she is despite having zero powers and wanting to help. She was never afraid to help and she's very diplomatic and good with people. However, she was a bit boring to me. I don't really understand the end of the book and her outcome. I personally didn't think she was anyone particularly special, and yet she's made out to be this amazing Phoenix. I mean maybe if she had some sort of talent, or skill that made her unique, I could see her being someone special, but that wasn't the case, and so the end was bit strange to me.

Other than that, I really liked the story! There's a lot more action, and suspense since it seemed like NOTHING was going their way when trying to stop Pytheios. It kept me at the edge of my seat, and I'm sad the series done. I now will have to read all the other books that are associated to this world by Abigail Owen! I highly recommend this series if you love dragons, phoenixes, steamy romances, and shifters.

A good fantasy read…

I love the characters and the action packed storyline was great. The emotional turmoil that Airk and Angelika went through was heart wrenching and drug more than I would have liked, but the HEA was sigh worthy.

Airk and Angelika's story was so steamy and with a great plot. The world-building of the series is one I really liked. I am loving the characters in the series. There is so much going on within each book that will capture you from the start. I so wished to hear them on audio someday. I love dragon shifter stories and this series is one I would totally recommend.

The Cursed King by Abigail Owen

This is the fourth and final book in the Inferno Rising series and while I'm sad it's ending this was a fantastic wonderful page turner from the chapter 1 to the final page with non-stop action. I wish that I could give it more than 5 stars because it was totally worth it. I would highly recommend reading the previous 3 books though so that you'll understand that those characters make many appearances in this book.

Angelika Amon knows that she doesn't have any Phoenix powers like her sisters but when she rescues Airk Azdajah from the dungeon of Everest that he's the rightful King of the White Clan. When she goes with him to find and convince allies for the upcoming battle against false High King Pytheios but convincing him that he's more than a former prisoner and that his dragon won't hurt her is going to take a lot. He'll need to release his dragon if he's going to fight against the corrupt clans but without any powers can she tell their White Dragon clan that what they were told by Pytheios were all lies?

Because a battle is coming and it's going to take everyone to fight against the false King, Rhiamon and his false Phoenix and it's going to be one epic battle to the finish. I'll leave this here because everyone should read this book to get the full story.

First off, that ending surprised me!
The Cursed King had a good plot, character depth, and filled with action.

I liked Airk and his character arc. I'm a sucker for the tortured soul trope. Angelika is our persistent phoenix with no powers. I enjoyed the world building and all the different supernatural/mythical creatures in this story. I think this was my favorite story of the series. I also didn't read this series in order and I highly recommend reading it the right way! I think I would have enjoyed aspects of it more.

Wonderful conclusion to the Inferno Rising series!

The Cursed King is Angelika and Airk's story and I just love them. They share a common bond of feeling useless because their powers are dormant but their similarities, for the most part, end there. This book is fantasy, action, and drama but also grumpy/sunshine, back and forth romance. I love a good fantasy story but sometimes, I find the romance can get lost in the explanation of the world. In The Cursed King, the romance and spice is woven perfectly throughout so Angelika and Airk's relationship and the story develop at the same time.

The love between mates in this series is seriously swoon-worthy and Angelika and Airk are no exception!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
