This book is basically what would have happened if wonder woman's island was conquered and all of the amazon women could control the elements! It is breathtaking! At first I was disappointed that the their wasn't much detail involving recruiting the surrogates or others, but it was clear that there were more important things later on! Highly recommend! I read the whole series in 4 days!

The last book in the series, turned out to be a pleasant closure to the story. Again, it was less unique then the first book. But I liked the plot development in this last one, and the more emotional conflicts that arose. I still stand by my opinion that this series is a nice read when you just want to escape in to a classic YA dystopian world, but it's no masterpiece.

I really enjoyed this series, but once again Violet annoyed me with her reckless behavior. I don't care if the other characters try to convince her it's not her fault, I still blame her. If she wasn't so stupid and arrogant and actually took a minute to think about her actions, she saw what her reckless behavior cost her in the first book, you'd think she'd learn but no. That girl is as hard headed as a bull. Anyway, this last book is fast-paced and action-packed and I really enjoyed it. Though I want to know why parental figures always get written off in YA books (unless they're the villain). I mean after everything that happened, I couldn't believe neither Hazel, Violet, or Ochre, wanted to go back to the Marsh to see their mom. I can understand not wanting to be back in the Marsh (though Violet did finally go back for a bit), but they could have at least sent for their mom to come to them. It's like the minute they left, they stopped caring about their mom. I do wish the ending could have been a bit longer and showed us more of the aftermath of what happened, but overall this was a good series.

I was happy to see the storyline return back to the Jewel in the last installment of Amy Ewing's Long City series - The Black Key. Although not all of my questions were answered and Ewing could have gone into more depth with the backstory and plot, this book was still entertaining.

And I finished the series. That was quick! I was surprised at how uniform the books seemed to be. In this type of series, I often find that the writing and/or story-telling and/or my interest level goes down with each new book. I was pleasantly surprised to find that that was not the case for this series. Granted, this also means that the books didn't get better as the series progressed, but that basically never happens.

Overall I lieks the books, they are mysterious and keep you on your toes. But I didn't like the developments of the plot in the final book, it kind of destroyed the ending for me. It felt like it was randomly introduced just to have a deeper more important ) resaon for everything.
