I loved the art in this book but was disappointed with the story (especially since it was hyped as quintessential Black Panther after the recent movie came out). Having the whole thing narrated by Everett Ross pulled me out of it more than it probably should have, but I never felt like I was on the same wavelength as the book.

I'm very confused by this volume. I heard such amazing things about the Christopher Priest run, but was definitely disappointed.  This entire volume is narrated by Everett Ross, who is telling a very disjointed story in a very annoying way. The back of the volume does have an explanation for why a comic about a Black superhero is narrated by a white man, and it basically boils down to exactly what I suspected - they wanted to make this series more palatable for white audiences. Resulting in this awful mess that could have been much better with a more authentic voice. It also had a very similar storyline to the Don McGregor run with T'Challa being away from Wakanda doing everything except leading his own nation lol. I hope future volumes give us a fresh story, hopefully one that actually takes place in Wakanda. I did like that this run seems to be more fast-paced than the Don McGregor one, which was a slog to get through. Maybe volumes 2-4 are better than this one!

I normally like Priest but this collection was just a mess. Inconsistent, incoherent story. 2 to 4 pages wasted each time recapping the previous issue, which is, to me, the sign of poor storytelling. I hated the story being told through the eyes of a low-level government lackey. The issue retelling an early Avengers meet-up done in the style of King Kirby was sacrilegious at best. The first couple of issues in the second arc elevated this to 2⭐️s.

Disappointed

I came to reading this after reading an article saying this run was used as inspiration for the Black Panther film. Some elements were used, but the overall pacing and characterization of the characters paled to their film counterparts. That and Ross is such a smart ass in this book that I wanted to punch him in the face.

Wow

This is some of the best writing and storytelling I have seen in a comic book since the seventies. A few little hiccups but this series made me like a character I never gave time to understand. Ross is annoying but his flubs keep him fresh. T'Challa is an amazing character but it is those around him, villains included that make him who he is.

Damn it! Again didn't remember reading this. Clearly did not like it as much as the first time either. ::sigh::

Enjoyable

Enjoyable, with a few dated references. I didn't expect this to end on a cliffhanger, now to find the rest...

DNF.
I didn't like this one. The story jumped around. I didn't like the narrator or the constant interruptions to his tale.
And I hated the artwork.
Definitely not for me.

This review sums up my opinion perfectly https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1785274170

One star for Ross.

Three stars for everything else.

That should average out to a two star review, but that's how bad the Ross stuff is. He brings everything else down.
