"We brought you truth, and in our mouth it sounded a lie. We brought you freedom, and it looks in our hands like a whip. We brought you the living life, and where our voice is heard the trees whither and there is a rustling of dry leaves. We brought you the promise of the future, but our tongue stammered and barked…"

Hungary. Dark and brilliant. The extended confrontation with the arm of the regime was intense and well done

The pace was a bit slow as it primarily focused on the introspection of the main character and his past. However it was a very interesting study of a person coming to terms with their past actions and moral dilemma in the face if execution. None of the characters are laudable but act according to their own sense of what is right.

One of the anti-totalitarian classics, Darkness at Noon tells the story of Rubashev, a Bolshevik of the old guard. The story starts with his arrest and follows his fate as he gets ground down under the wheels of the Communist justice system. The reader is also treated to flashbacks of Rubashev’s life as a key member of the party. This was, for me, a fascinating read as I was once again faced by the monolith of the Communist party and its ruthless way of treating all who step out of line.
