This is a collection of short stories and one novella, Nightflyers. The ideas and concepts with all of these stories are good and sound but I don't feel they were executed and formulated very well. The writing style was a trouble for me as well, and I just found that the stories were mediocre at best. These stories are very old, if I remember correctly which may be way I don't like it. I am not a fan of older styled Science Fiction.

About the Book: Several very solid, well thought out stories on transcending humanity, and the horrors it can bring. Limited species, us, in a limitless universe, where any bump with an alien person, mind, be it passing them on the station, getting a cup of coffee, booking a ship somewhere, can lead to irreversible alteration of self, as our limits break. Some sought it out willingly. Others were forced or tricked into it. And still, among them, lucky those who lived to tell us their tale.

My Opinion: An easy-to-slow paced telling of stories that range from such small scenes as a ship whose captain never shows his face, to such grand ideas as a mind of the universe, the universal One. Very good atmosphere building, and solid characters. This book is worth reading by both the fans of the author, and those who aren’t familiar with his works. A classic sci-fi horror, as can be, with all the freaky shit that’s both scary and horribly enticing at the same time.

I enjoyed the title story "Nightflyers" , except for the sexism in the first 30pages... That was sooo unnecessary...🤪
"Override" and "Nor the Many-Colored Fires of a Star Ring" were also quite interesting.
Didn't care for the rest.

Didn’t get far into this at all before I DNF’d it. Sci-fi is not my sort of thing and I regret not reading the blurb before buying this lmao. oh well

Hmm…my first short story collection I’m reviewing on Goodreads. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Did I enjoy all of it? No.

The two stories that bookend this…book are the standouts. In fact, the first 3 are great. Filled with imagination and charm and they really move along at a serious pace with terrific ideas. The next two sort of fell flat. Good ideas in there somewhere, but lost I think at being short stories. Far too much going on in trying to establish the world and then the story was over. Nightflyers and A Song for Lya being the longer ones definitely were the best.

Having a good imagination is great, sometimes less is more, and a short story does not always need a fully realised world fleshed out. Let the story breathe first.

But the 4 stories I did enjoy were excellent. Really, really good.
