1- 4.5 stars. surprisingly good! Scottish vampires in the 1500s, the classic kind, Highlander Scottish speech (didnae, bairn, etc). Mostly a slow burn with a few thrills. Wish we had more world building (we get glimpses: spirits?? Hell??) but it’s a short story so all is forgiven. I liked both main characters. They’re just so good to eachother. There’s the usual misunderstandings and insecurities of a new romance but they were both so…giving. The main drama is “will they accept me even tho I’m supernatural” + “the townspeople are trying to kill us”, yes it’s not terribly original but it was done well. I liked that David, the little brother, felt like a child and not an adult in child form (a lot of authors don’t write children well). Also this is weird to type, but the ‘taking of virginity’ scene was surprisingly sweet, it wasn’t glossed over as a nonevent nor was it graphic, and it wasn’t man-centric if that makes sense.

2- 1.5 stars. 1200s Middle Ages type fiefdoms. Writing is fine, it’s mostly smut. What killed me was that when FMC discovers her brand new, up-til-now loving husband is a vampire and is understandably frightened, asks if he is going to kill her, and he goes “I could. Or I could turn you, and make you as I am. Which frightens you more, I wonder?” That’s just cruel dude. It was emblematic of his characterization. He seemed mean.

3- 3 stars. Slow burn. Detracted stars due to the slowww start in the plot - the romance doesn’t need to happen asap but *something* should, instead it felt very meandering until 40 pages in or so. I liked both characters and the dialogue towards the end was very cute. Also detracted stars because FMC  just could not put it together that the hunk she’s been drooling over is a vampire - the hunk that is super pale, avoids sunlight, and has little need for food or sleep. And this is *after* she’s read an entire leaflet her dad gave her, describing something very similar called ‘Vampyres’. She just doesn’t connect the dots smh.
