I liked this book more than I thought I would. Women’s literature is not a genre that I usually read. This was a very well-written story about 3 American expatriates living in Hong Kong, set in the current time. Two are very wealthy and one is poor. One of the rich women has her 4 year old son kidnapped while the poor woman is supposed to be watching him. The other rich woman can’t have a baby, but her husband ends up getting the poor woman pregnant. It’s not as sordid as it sounds. It’s really more about deep feelings and trying to find your way in the world. The way they live so rich that they have servants is unsettling, but realistic. I would recommend this book for sure.

This book haunted me which I guess is the makings of powerful storytelling. Having been a 'trailing spouse' on three expat assignments, there was such familiarity in the tales of these three woman -- Margaret, Mercy, and Hilary. There were pieces of my life and woman/families I've known. It is a beautiful story of the struggle to discover inner strength and the odd world of being an expat.
