These stories were riveting. Better than reading fiction, and all the more poignant because they’re real people’s lives you’re reading about. I didn’t enjoy the overly punctilious tones of the narrator of the audio book, but the writing and the stories were good enough that I’ll probably buy the book in hard copy for my collection. Perhaps the saddest truth of the whole book is that the worst realities presented in the book from the 1990s still persist today, 25 years after the subjects’ stories left off and 16 years after the book was written.

I found this very enlightening as someone who had previously only heard a little bit of information about North Korea.
I also found the ending to be very well spoken. That being said, I didn't like that the (white) author used the O- word so much, considering that it's generally considered to be a very offensive slur, even though the book itself isn't that old to be using such outdated terminology.
Also, I didn't like that it sort of props capitalism up as great in comparison to "communism," when capitalism definitely has its problems. It also refers to the dictatorship as communism many times, even though it's not true communism at all.

I couldn’t stand the narrative structure or the audiobook narrator. DNF @ 36%.

book club selection for april. four stars for content, but i did not get into demick's style at all. her transitions between stories was rough and transparent.
think i might need to read something about fluffy bunnies and cute puppies after this.
