This book was incredible and rightfully so my first five star read of the year. It is heartbreaking yet hopeful at the same time. One of the first chapters says "...people usually analyze North Korea from afar. They don’t stop to think that in the middle of this black hole, in this bleak, dark country where millions have died of starvation, there is also love." and I think this is indicative of the entire book's premise and the stories that are told. it is beautiful and heartbreaking and well worth the time to read.

Both enlightening and tragic to hear the stories of people with lived experience. Highly recommended read to gain better insight into what the average citizen goes through to survive in North Korea.
