This is a fascinating book, with some horrifying parts obviously. Made me want to re-watch Crash Landing On You.

Well-researched, well-written, moving, and informative.

When one thinks of North Korea, it's usually about how repressive the Kim regime is. You don't think as much about how abjectly shitty the existence of the average citizen is. But it wasn't always so bad - in the 60s and 70s it was more prosperous than South Korea, and there was electricity, food, medical care, and manufacturing. Losing all of that in the 80s and 90s was downright apocalyptic.

Nothing to Envy was recommended to me by my Father and my friend Mike in quick succession. The journalist author follows several North Korean defectors who graciously shared their stories of growing up and leaving North Korea. What better was to see inside the county than by the people who lived it? It was particularly interesting, after learning about each person's life in North Korea, to see them assimilate into South Korean and Chinese cultures. I cannot imagine how overwhelming that felt.

North Korea. Gosh, it breaks your heart to hear of the injustice. The starvation and the manipulation; the fear. If their reality weren't so real and horrifying, this would make a great fictional story, but knowing it's true is devastating.

I do wish we would have heard more of their exact voices rather than a third-party retelling, though I understand that might not have felt right. How can I be greedy with someone's incredibly personal and difficult story? I am grateful for what they have given. Even though I have read several books on North Korea, this one offered a unique and varied perspective.
