Absolutely fascinating; even more so than "Aquariums of Pyongyang" because it tells the stories of 6 different North Korean defectors rather than one. It also gives more political and historical background than "Aquariums." I read it in less than 2 days and highly recommend it.
This book builds a great case for being grateful for what you have. The personal stories were very interesting to me, but I was more fascinated by the propaganda and the methods the Communist regime uses to to control its citizens.
Every so often one comes across a book that changes the way you see the world. This is one of those books. It is easily one of the best nonfiction books that I've ever read. Read this book and read it now.
Really really eye opening and neat read! My only complaint is that some of the information was repetitive.
I wonder if I will always give 5 stars to non-fiction books simply because I learn something new? Just a thought. Yeah for non-fiction (though I love fiction too).
Brad and I both read this for our couple's bookclub. I must admit that I didn't even know the exact location of Korea until reading this book. I was shocked to learn about the conditions in North Korea. I had no idea that people there were starving from a famine just as I was graduating from high school. I didn't realize how they lived, or why they live the way they do. I highly recommend this book. Once I stated I could not put it down. It was fascinating!

Very interesting book about the lives of folks who lived in North Korea. I knew things were bad but I had no idea how dire the situation was in the 90s.
Very engaging and informative. I couldn’t stop listening and wanted to know more and more about the lives shared in this book. The most interesting topic for me was that those who survive are often not “good” people, but those willing to fight for themselves to stay alive by any means necessary, yet that requirement to have to fight for themselves also doesn’t make them bad people.
This book was truly amazing. It was written very well and chronicled the lives of several North Korean defectors. More than anything, the author did not taint the stories with her own opinions but rather stuck to the story the way the people told them. It is an eye opening book, one that I HIGHLY recommend for anyone interested in learning more about the big world we live in. Keep an open mind and be inspired.
