Be prepared to cry. Dr. Wellons weaves intensely emotional stories from his time as a pediatric neurosurgeon with medical descriptions. At times, the medical jargon was too much for me. But it was easy to skim past the medical terms in favor of the story. He really made this book feel personal. It’s clear that he cares deeply about his patients. I read this as part of book club and probably wouldn’t have picked it up myself. Although at times a difficult and depressing read, there were also moments of joy and miracles. I’m glad to have read it.

There are some marvelous stories in here, but they are buried under the weight of sentence structure that makes whole paragraphs a maze to work through. He just needed a really good editor.

A most engaging book by a pediatric neurosurgeon with humility and a love for his patients. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, listening to the life or death drama of the stories he told about the children. If you think you're having a bad day, read a story from this book.
