I really tried, but the story got lost in the very gory/suffering descriptions... of both people and animals.

Whew, I was warned it was graphic😅🫠

A group of boy scouts and their scoutleader are off on an island trip when a stranger in a boat comes to shore.  Something is most definitely wrong with him, and it seems to be contagious.

I'm not exactly sure how to rate a book that made me feel so grossed out. I literally had to stop and walk away a few times🤢 it was a lot, but also I needed to keep reading.  I wouldn't say I exactly enjoyed it,  but I would recommend to horror book lovers🙃

The writing was very good. The narrator was also very good

I don't read many horror books, except for Stephen King's works, but I really enjoy a story about an out of control infection. Although this book had a lot of gore, it was mostly sci-fi in nature, which I can handle. The tension in the scenes was so palpable that I would literally tense up and make faces while reading. Overall, I loved it. The alternating timeline between the court proceedings and the island added to the mysterious atmosphere, but there was one storyline,
Shelley's
, that I didn't enjoy. I felt it was unnecessary and the story already had enough tension without his
psychopathic
plotline. Personally, I thought it weakened the whole story. I even skipped a chapter because of the content and it has zero impact on the overall story. But, maybe I'm just more of a sci-fi nerd!

This very much reminded me of the Lord of Flies, but with a bioengineered parasitic nightmare.

I wanted to finish this SO BADLY. It’s just TOO SCARY. It hits too many of my triggers (contagions, violence involving animals). The writing is wonderful, the character development is complex and fascinating, and the suspense and fear are built flawlessly. This book really hits (what I think) are the most terrifying elements of horror and science fiction really well; it hovers just barely outside reality, with enough believability to make the reader forget they’re in a fictional realm.  I simply found it too scary to continue. That being said, I think someone who really enjoys more horror (and can stomach more gore) would love this! I’d totally recommend to a horror fan, but it’s not smart for me to keep reading it.
