This story is wild! I didn't know anything about this and haven't listened to the podcast. I found Jamie Bartlett through Rebel Book Club. I'm now going to listen to the podcast to keep following this story as it isn't finished!
This is the story of Ruja Ignatova, a Bulgarian businesswoman at the top of an elaborate cryptocurrency scam tree. It was a Ponzi pyramid scheme with millions of investors worldwide and is believed to have lost them billions of dollars. She is now a fugitive, believed to be floating out of jurisdictions on a boat in the Med.
So many people were scammed not wanting to miss out on the latest crypto 'One Coin' after the success of BitCoin willingly handed over life savings to people who recruited them (often friends and families) to invest. In reality, the blockchain for the currency didn't exist, it became so out of control that the founders could not fix their way out of it as you cannot retrospectively make blockchain transactions.
I've learned more about blockchain and cryptocurrencies from reading this. And it's always good to be reminded when something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
