this was a pretty decent book! I appreciated the asian and lgbtqia+ rep and the mc's experiences in shooting movies as an asian woman. however, the plot was very predictable and there wasn't much build-up.

While I appreciated the historical information about China, the perspective of China from a Chinese American, the depiction of Asian representation and struggles within American media, and the portrayal of immigrants connecting back with their homeland, Heiress Apparently's plot was a mess. There was almost no buildup, so the climax felt flat, and there were just too many story lines going on. Overall, I love what Heiress Apparently is trying to do, but the book could have used some pruning.

(Oh, I give Heiress Apparently brownie points for indirectly referencing the girl group Fanxy Red/Acrush!)

This book is a fun romp, a kin to Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan.
Gemma Huang is a Chinese American actress who is looking for her breakout roll. When she wins a roll that takes her to China, a place that her mum told her to never go to, she discovers an amazing secret.
This is a nice book that takes us through high society in Beijing. I enjoyed the characters and the fun twists that the book took us on. While nothing extraordinary, it was a nice palet cleanse with likeable characters. The core messages of believing in oneself and caring for your family are a great thing to habe in a book.
