This book will fill your Rich Crazy Asians pangs. It's well written, the characters are great, there was only a very small bit of people not telling each other things...inside the story, there wasn't too much of it.
I liked Gemma. She was awesome, going for what she wanted, and even when she backed off for a bit it was just so she could come back stronger. I was pretty sure what was going to happen with that suit, and it was even better than I hoped for when it paid off.
I'll be back for the next book. But knowing me, I'll have forgotten the characters by then!

this book took me exactly two hours to read. i flew through it, because it was easy to read, with a fun plot, and irresistible characters. i would be lying if i said i didnt wish i had a crazy rich asians secret back story and a fabulous life like gemma, and i especially loved all the references to current pop culture that i understood. it was crazy how completely recent this book is, including mentions of covid in the authors note.
i really loved what she tried to evoke with family, belonging, othering, microaggressions, homecoming. i understood it all, as a child of immigrants myself. it's another one of those books i would have killed to read 6 years ago. the story that Ma was trying to tell really hit home for me.
the writing is a little bit lacking in show-not-tell, but honestly, i think this would make a fabulous movie, and it was great fun to read. nothing extraordinary, but really wonderful nonetheless.

I think there was something missing in this one for me. Just a one thing missing for me to love it but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

“After all, the women in my family are descended from royalty. So maybe it’s time for me to rule.”
That ending was just way too happy. I have trouble believing that everything would resolve itself so well. It was nice to see supportive Asia parents for once though.

It was a beautiful Asian American book, and it was so refreshing to be able to relate to the main character. The pacing of the book starts off slow to build the plot and set the scenes, but the second half flies by and I could not put it down. It gives you the closure you need at end tie up all the loose ends.
I really enjoyed this book. It was reminiscent of Loveboat Taipei & Crazy Rich Asians. It's a story about discovering your roots, where your family comes from, and fighting for what you believe in. Well written. I look forward to reading the next in the series.
A super quick, fun and sweet read. Perfect for fans of Crazy Rich Asians or even films like The Christmas Prince.
I loved the cast of characters and the romance was so sweet. I don't normally read contemporary, but this was just precious!
