It's definitely a must-read classic for any adolescent reader who has his own defiance and struggles of growing-up. Hermann Hesse brilliantly interrogates the intrapersonal crisis of Emil Sinclair (Hesse's adolescent persona) who encounters a totally antithetic realm to the comfort, wealth and protection of his childhood ever since interacting with a cold-hearted bully, Kromer. Demian is a amazing book for high school students because it depicts the relationships and emotions that closely resemble their own personal experiences (bullying, friendship, embarrassment, sexual awakening, etc) but they are told and reflected by an adult to add its incredible depth.

Interesting. Cool. Liked it. Unsure if I really got the central plot… but good vibes

Devia ter lido isso enquanto era adolescente...

People with courage and character always seem weird to other people. It was very uncomfortable to have a race of fearless, weird people running around, so now they hung a nickname on that race and made up a story about it in order to take revenge on it, in order to be compensated to some extent for all the fear they had undergone.

Alright. I hope I don't make myself sound more uncultured than I already am. Still, this book primarily revolves around the life of Emil Sinclair, and his relationship (or personal attachment, and maybe, attraction?) with a somehow-enigmatic schoolmate, Max Demian. Demian is pretty much that dude who gets philosophical and talks and talks and talks with just the slightest trigger and always succeeds in making you feel small, and sometimes, stupid. See where I'm going? Or are you guys already thinking of a face you know all too well? I think, in life, we all have encountered this kind of person.

Buuuuuutttt (important: there is a but here), I don't hate this book. I think it's kind of a nod to all the social pariahs. To the ones who are always seemed and deemed 'different' by their peers. Which sometimes leads to bullying or alienation, or even fear.

This is clearly an OG Fafifu™ Books.
However, I think it is one of the good ones.

Not really my cup of tea. Heavily influenced by Jung and his archetypes and symbols which I didn't particularly feel like deciphering but then if you don't do that this novel is just very strange and uncomfortable.
slow-paced

Honestly more like a 2.5. Might revisit at some point but it felt like I was pulling faces during most of the book.

Loved it so much. ♥ read it
