A very interesting book, and I really liked the evolution of Sinclair as a character. Deep in its depiction of the world from the perspective of a fervently faithful child who sees his world turn to the darkness, who then learns to embrace this earthly world thanks to Max. Max Demian, in turn, was a extremely interesting character, this mystic guide that aids Sinclair in his spiritual awakening, as well as people like Pistorius who also serve the same goal.
All in all, I think the bits with Eva were the weakest, as it felt rather sudden and underwhelming of a revelation, when the marked are introduced, then the war. The final parts were satisfying, and very narratively conclusive, but overall, it felt a lot more disperse than the rest of the work.
All in all, however, it was an enjoyable read with a very strong character and a very satisfying development.

I absolutely loved the first half of this book. I thought Hesse perfectly captured the angst of growing up and stomaching that the world (and its patrons) is cruel. As for the second half, maybe it went too over my head and that’s a me problem, but I did not understand the spiritual change in Sinclair. Rather actually, I understood the need for spiritual change but became lost amongst all the silly symbolism, especially with regards to Demian’s mother. Really strange.

Knowing nothing about the book or the author (other than having heard his name in passing over the years), I embarked on this and was wonderfully pleased. This book about the existential and philosophical musings of a young man over his life and his bouncing back and forth between passions, lifestyles, insecurities, and understanding was just right up my alley.
Though I didn’t quite follow all the themes or ideas herein, there’s enough to pull me back in to explore it more in the future.

Siendo esta la primera vez que leo un libro de Hermann Hesse, no me queda del todo claro de qué va la historia. Es decir, no tengo claro el hilo que sigue: principio, nudo y desenlace.
Lo que sí me queda claro es que Demian es una historia sobre la búsqueda de la individualidad, del yo interior y de la consciencia de sí mismo.
En palabras de Jung, «El libro causó en mí, lo que la luz de un faro en una noche de tormenta. Su libro tiene el mejor final posible, y es allí, en donde todo lo anticipado tiene también en realidad un final, y todo de nuevo comienza, esto es, con lo que el libro comienza, con el nacimiento y crecimiento de una nueva persona».
Lo que sí me queda claro es que Demian es una historia sobre la búsqueda de la individualidad, del yo interior y de la consciencia de sí mismo.

الأزمة الوجودية التي يمر بها سنكلير كانت خالية من العمق والأحداث التي أدت إليها كانت غبية باختصار.
كرهت كوني داخل دماغ سنكلير أثناء قراءة الرواية وممتنة لتوقفي أخيرًا.
أعطيتها فرصة لشهرتها فقط.
قرأت بانتباه أول ٧٤ صفحة والباقي تصفحته سريعًا قبل ترك الرواية وليتني لم أفعل لأنه كان أسوء مما سبقه.

This is a great book but I didn't connect with it as much. Probably read it at a wrong time, since this seems like a book I would have devoured in another world. I can appreciate the writing and topics discussed - did I agree with all of the discussions that took place... no. Thought some of it was nonsense but most of it was very insightful and provokes your mind to delve deeper.
