*To anyone wondering - I read this on a free pdf file available with a quick google search*
Whoa.
This book was a huge journey. I only wished I had read it during my adolescent years, but nonetheless, I'm glad I read it in my 20's. I think anyone could find themselves as Sinclair and read the story as their own.
I will disclose that I came upon this book because of BTS, and I'm glad I did! Not only did it make BTS's story make more sense, but I also discovered a book that resonated deep with me.
I don't usually read philosophical books, and this was my first Hesse novel, and because it was written nearly a whole century ago, I feared I won't be able to relate to it. I was wrong. Demian is a novel that will forever be relevant, I feel, since it speaks about the deeper sense and experience of growing up and maturing in a way that we all go through, to some extent.
I have the mark, as do many of my friends, and only now I'm able to recognize it. Now I know why I attract certain people, unknowingly.
This book explained to me a lot of things I went through and am still experiencing and made life seem a little less terrifying, like I wasn't alone in all of this. Hermann Hesse understood my story because his was the same. He gave words to things I thought were unreachable.
I recommend this book! Don't be alarmed by the fact it was written so long ago, or because it touches philosophical discussions. It is a story everyone can relate to. You might even meet yourself within its pages.
*I'd also like to mention that I found a lot of sexual undertones in Sinclair's treatment of Demian, though Hesse attempted to dull them out - maybe because of the time it was published? Throughout this novel I felt Sinclair was deeply in love with Demian; Eva's storyline just an extension and an excuse for his sexual and mental attraction to her son. What do you think about this?
